PLASTIC MATERIALS ENGINEER (M/V)

deSter is looking for a Plastic Materials Engineer to strengthen the product development team.

FUNCTION

The Plastic Materials Engineer coordinates materials developments and optimization projects as part of the product development pipeline and translates these together with product management, design, product engineering and manufacturing engineering into feasible products.
An important part of the function is supporting the innovation process with the identification of new materials, material improvements, new ways of using existing materials in line with the raw materials and eco-strategy of deSter. Together with the production and procurement department the Plastic Materials Engineer is involved in defining and implementing of improvement/ cost savings projects (continuous improvement)
The Plastic Materials Engineer is responsible for defining and coordinating actions following material related issues in an efficient and effective manner.
The position holder reports directly to the Sustainable packaging and senior materials expert

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES

• Identifying, coordinating and performing technical product developments linked to the materials
• Translating material properties to performant new products and defining the right material mix (e.g. fillers, engineered plastics…)
• Responsible for executing and coordinating the deSter materials strategy
• Assist procurement in evaluating new suppliers in terms of quality, batch consistency, reliability,…
• Responsible for approving new and existing materials before going into production (together with quality, head of procurement and head of manufacturing)
• Contacting and working together with external partners to enable developments and implementations
• Assist the quality department in the resolution of quality issues related to raw materials
• Support quality with food contact legislation compliance and DOC contents
• Assist and coordinate with the further growth of our testing facilities
• Market research to pick up new developments and introduce new opportunities from other markets (e.g. patent screening) in cooperation with Product Management
• Identify joint development projects, connect with external research centers and look for funding opportunities for our developments
• Actively look for cost saving and efficiency increasing opportunities
• Test and evaluate new and existing materials to improve products or introduce new products

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Master degree in Engineering/Technical Product Development with a very strong knowledge related to materials (plastics, chemistry etc); or Master degree in Chemistry with a strong knowledge of engineering and development; or equivalent through experience.
• Experience in a Manufacturing and Customer Driven environment
• Strong knowledge on materials and material applications with a focus on plastics
• Knowledge of processing plastics (Injection molding and Thermoforming) is a strong plus
• Knowledge about engineered plastics (fillers, additives etc.) is a plus
• Knowledge about food contact legislation is a plus
• Strong knowledge of MS Office (Excel / Power Point)

PRODUCT DEVELOPER - CARDBOARD PACKAGING (M/V)

We are looking to strenghten our product development team with a product developer cardboard packaging.

FUNCTION

A Product Developer with a strong technical background in cardboard food packaging combined with commercial feeling. Manage and execute cardboard developments from initial idea to final delivery and effectively balance the commercial, technical and design aspects during these new product developments. Key area of focus will be cardboard food packaging products for buy on board, developed in cooperation with related food processors, but will also include plastic product developments


Responsible for new product development and the product development process.

• Involved in co-development projects with the gate group Innovation Centre and airline customers.
• Converting the initial idea into a clear development
• Collaboration with cardboard suppliers, procurement, sales and design
• Understand the onboard service and product lifecycle (crew handling, passenger usage, operations, logistics….) & integrate this knowledge in the developments
• Being the contact person for all technical related matters related cardboard packaging
• Manage projects from initial idea to final delivery of the product and create the best customer solution, taking into account added value, cost, design and technical feasibility.
• Give support where needed (e.g. to the food processor) during the implementation
• Support presentations. (special specifications, specific selling points …)


Responsible for the specifications of the product/development
• The jobholder is responsible for the specification of the product and responsible for the product drawing, both as input for the quotation process towards suppliers
• Make sure the specifications are in line with the customer expectations on look and feel, usage of the products, operations and logistics
• Responsible for the product approval and introduction of the product. Check if product/samples are in line with the agreed specifications.
• Adjust specifications and products based on learnings from quality
• Propose specs changes to enhance profitability
• Support quality in finding the root causes and solutions for quality complaints

The person will report to the Senior Product Developer Cardboard Products

KEY CHALLENGES

SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

• Product development or Engineering education – Master or similar by work experience

• Knowledge of printing techniques
• Knowledge of injection moulding and thermoforming is a plus
• Market knowledge in aviation food service is a plus
• Feeling and understanding of design (product design and graphical design)
• Experience in customer presentations and communication.
• Project management skills
• Computer and software knowledge (powerpoint, excel, word)
• Knowledge of ArtiosCAD design software is a big plus
• Knowledge of graphical software is a plus

TABLEWARE DEVELOPER FRONT CABIN (M/V)

To strengthen our product development team we're looking for a Product Developer Front Cabin tableware products.

FUNCTION

Responsible for the development of foodservice equipment for the airline business class cabin
Understand the dynamics between food, hospitality and tableware to meet the customer expectations with the right product developments.


Responsible for new product development and the product development process.
• Involved in co-development projects with key airline customers. Collaboration, converting the customer need into a clear development
• understand the onboard hospitality/service and product lifecycle (crew, handling, passenger usage, operations, logistics, food….) & integrate this knowledge in the customer proposals
• Technical understanding of the involved products to be able to drive developments
• Being the contact person for all product related matters related to chinaware, stainless steel and glassware.
• Manage projects, and give direction especially to sales, design and procurement to create the best customer experience taking into account added value, cost, design and technical feasibility.
• Support sales in presentations to customers. (present, create communication tools…)
• Be the driver in proactive developments based on food, hospitality and equipment trends and understanding of the market, to grow the product range and to stay competitive.
• Define and gather inspiration related to hospitality, food and tableware for the front end of the organization as source of new developments

• Market knowledge in aviation food service is a big plus
• Feeling and understanding of design (product design and graphical design)
• Experience in customer presentations and communication.
• Knowledge and interest in products/materials related to the product categories: chinaware, glassware, stainless steel, linen. (functionality, • specifications, production processes)
• Project management skills
• Analytical skills to perform product analysis and to define processes.
