deSter and RAFC introduce a reusable drinking cup concept

Antwerpen, Belgium, 10 August 2023 – deSter, a leading provider of innovative solutions for the airline and catering industry, is thrilled to announce its groundbreaking partnership with Royal Antwerp Football Club (RAFC) in introducing a new era of sustainability in sports events. Together, they proudly present the reusable drinking cup concept, set to debut on 11th August 2023, during football matches at RAFC’s stadium. This exciting initiative will allow football fans to savor their beverages in eco-friendly reusable cups, significantly contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally responsible matchday experience.

Recognizing the urgency to combat single-use plastic waste, RAFC partnered with deSter to introduce an eco-conscious solution—a reusable drinking cup that promotes a circular economy. Proudly manufactured in Hoogstraten, Belgium, these cups ensure exceptional quality while minimizing the carbon footprint.

Starting from the 11th of August drinks at the stadium will be served in these reusable cups, which will be available with a deposit. When fans return their empty cups to the bar after consumption, they will receive a cash refund.

Stef Van de Perre, President and Managing Director at deSter, expressed his enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted to join forces with RAFC and pave the way for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly matchday experience for football fans. The adoption of reusable products is rapidly gaining momentum, and we take immense pride in our high-quality products that many will enjoy using again and again.”

Kris Onghena, COO of RAFC, supported the initiative, stating, “This partnership represents a meaningful step towards a greener future for sports events. We believe that through collective efforts, we can inspire positive change in our community and beyond.”

This collaboration between deSter and RAFC marks a significant milestone in the sports and events industry’s journey toward sustainability. Looking ahead, the concept is set to evolve further, with plans to enable a streamlined return system where the deposit is automatically reimbursed to the bank card via RFID chip in the cups. After consumption, fans will be able to conveniently return the empty cups to “smart garbage bins” placed around the stadium. These bins will automatically detect the returned cups and link them to the respective person’s bank card who paid the deposit, ensuring a fair, ultra-fast and hassle-free refund process.

Together, deSter and RAFC are leading the way towards a greener and more sustainable future for sports events. The reusable drinking cup concept not only enhances the matchday experience for fans but also sets a powerful example for other sports clubs and industries to follow suit in their pursuit of environmental responsibility.
