Advancing circular onboard dining with Etihad Airways
Challenge
Etihad Airways set out to significantly reduce single-use plastic across its onboard operations while maintaining the high-quality dining experience expected by its guests. The airline was looking for a solution that could support its ambitious sustainability targets without compromising functionality, durability or brand experience.
Solution
Working closely with Etihad, deSter developed a fully reusable Economy Class dining concept built around circular design principles. The collection includes trays, casseroles, bowls, lids and platters made from recycled high-quality plastic, all designed to be collected, washed and reused onboard.
At the end of their life cycle, the products are recycled and remanufactured into the same items, creating a closed-loop system that minimizes waste and keeps valuable materials in use for longer. To further reduce single-use plastics, the tableware is complemented by stainless-steel cutlery, paper cups and alternative materials such as wooden stirrers and pressed paperboard components.
Results
- Developed a fully reusable and recyclable Economy Class dining concept based on closed-loop principles
- Eliminated single-use plastic from the main Economy Class dining setup
- Created a tableware collection that combines premium aesthetics, durability and operational performance

Impact
The project demonstrates how circular design can transform onboard dining without compromising passenger experience. By replacing disposable products with a durable and fully recyclable alternative, deSter helped Etihad create a dining concept that combines sustainability, design excellence and operational practicality.
